Caring for 1st Degree Burns

On-Site with Alliance Safety

First-degree burns are the least severe type of burns. Typical first aid for these types of burns is to run them under cool water for 10-15 minutes to provide relief. They will heal quickly because they only affect the outermost layers of skin. If it is really irritating for the individual, you can apply aloe or a burn ointment.

An often overlooked concern with first-degree burns is that you are damaging the part of the skin that is heavily involved in regulating body temperature. Small burns will have a negligible effect on a person’s core temp, but large burns (like very large sunburns) will make a person susceptible to temperature extremes much quicker than normal.

If a person returns from a vacation looking like a lobster because they forgot the sunscreen, keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t suffer a quicker-than-normal heat emergency.
